[Op-Ed] Speeka: “‘Dankie San’ brought me closer to kasi rap”

Ed's note: South Africa's national channel SABC 1 recently aired a 2-part documentary on the making of Dankie San, the late South African rapper PRO's 2007 album which is considered by many as his magnum opus. The album is considered a "kasi rap bible." In this Op-Ed, South African hip-hop producer and powerhouse of kasi rap, Speeka reflects on the album's impact on the South African scene and his own life. 2007 was a strange year for me. I had matriculated the previous year, and, thanks to succumbing to peer pressure, was studying I.T.. I eventually dropped out because instead of doing my Programming assignments, I focused most of my energy on being a hip-hop head and making beats. I cared very little for anything outside hip-hop culture. I was deeply entrenched into both American and Sou...

Interview: Bumi Thomas Was Given 14 Days to Leave the UK

There's a lot of vulnerability and soul packed into Bumi Thomas' latest EP. Given the surrounding context of a legal battle, Broken Silence was released, in Bumi's words, "at a time when microcosms of institutionalised racism have garnered so much momentum highlighting the domino effect of systems of oppression that have led to this powerful, global resurgence of the Black lives matter movement."The inspiration behind this EP came at a time when Bumi faced a legal battle to stay in the UK, after receiving a letter from the UK Home Office to leave the country within 14 days. Understandably causing huge stress, this case turned from an isolated incident to national news, with 25,000 people signing her petition and raising money via crowdfunding for legal fees. We spoke with the British-based...

I Would Rather Breathe Than Think Outside the Box

This essay is part of OkayAfrica's SA Reframed series, featuring personal writing from some of South Africa's best young writers edited by Verashni Pillay. On the radio the other day, I heard a small business owner of a costume design company being interviewed and asked how they have managed to:a. Reinvent themselves during this period, and b. Think outside the box while doing so. Their conversation made me think about how I have not managed to wrap my head around any sort of future, or reinvention outside any kind of box—beyond the one that wraps itself around my immediate reality. When the lockdown was announced, three friends and I withdrew to a remote area where internet access was dubious and, most times, simply not available. I would need to walk a bit of a distance to locate a ...

Interview: Omah Lay Is Nigeria’s New Young Act to Watch

Omah Lay's music is at once introspective and hedonistic, matched with the vibrancy of alt-pop production, sometimes crafted by the artist himself. The Nigerian act, who released his debut EP, Get Layd, earlier this year has been described as wielding the "lyricism of Burna Boy and the melodies of Wizkid."Omah Lay's grandfather played in Celestine Ukwu's highlife band; his father played the drums too. Being put through his paces in Nigeria's South region—specifically Port Harcourt—supplies the grit to Omah's velvety singing. The starkness of the world he inhabits is a wonder and his lyrics are too. Phrases like "You dun burst my eyeglass" and "Omo she be SARS and she carry full van" are a cultural stamp, a burst out of the ordinary for listeners, many of whom now declare Omah L...

WOO FOREVER: POP SMOKES POSTHUMOUS ALBUM RELEASED

Pop Smokes long awaited album has been released with new cover art and an amazing tracklist. The album, titled Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon was released on Friday after the first version of the album cover designed by Virgil Abloh was trash (if we keep it two virgils) and it caused some controversy earlier in the week as fans voiced their displeasure. Although, Steven Victor from the Victor Victor imprint that worked closely with Pop stated that it was Pop Smoke's request for Virgil to design the album cover. However he stated that the album cover will be changed. Pop’s debut album, which was produced by 50 Cent, was initially scheduled for release in early June. however, the date was pushed back due to the protests happening in the USA and worldwide.  The Brookl...

REVISITING THE PAST WINNERS OF THE HEADIES NEXT RATED AWARD

In one of the greatest scams in music history, German-French R&B duo Milli Vanilli won the Grammy award for Best New Artist in February 1990. Prior to that win, there were hushes that Rob and Fab, the acts in the group, hadn’t sung a note on their breakout album, ‘Girl You Know It’s True’, and those suspicions were confirmed later that year. While Milli Vanilli’s win was quickly rescinded, it became a big smudge on the reputation of the prestigious category. The very next year, Mariah Carey won the award and quickly restored some validation to the category. Beyond the clear potential she possessed and her already successful eponymous debut LP, the category’s actual vindication, is that Mariah went on to build an immense and longstanding career as one of pop music’s be...
