After sharing Black Is King last month exclusively through Disney+, Beyoncé has now made the music video for “Brown Skin Girl”—her standout single from Lion King: The Gift featuring Wizkid, Saint JHN and Blue Ivy—widely available to watch on Youtube.
The stunning visual, directed by Nigerian-British artist and director Jenn Nkiru, is a star-studded affair that features appearances Lupita Nyong’o, Naomi Campbell, Kelly Rowland, daughter Blue Ivy, Wizkid and more.
Speaking with Good Morning America, Beyoncé explained: “It was so important to me in ‘Brown Skin Girl’ that we represented all different shades of brown. I wanted every character to be shot in a regal light. Jenn Nkiru came up with the Black debutants. It was important that we’re all in this together and we’re all celebrating each other”
“My greatest inspiration come from Black people, specifically Black women,” added Nkiru in that same GMA piece.
Last year we named “Brown Skin Girl” one of the best songs of 2019, writing that “the global impact of the single “Brown Skin Girl” is irrefutable. From Lupita Nyong’o to the adorable Dream Catchers‘ viral video, it’s clear that this song, and more especially its lyrics, affirms and continues to affirm brown skin girls in every corner of the world. From its minimal afro-fusion inspired beat to Wizkid’s outstanding lead verse, this was a major moment that showcased just how far Nigerian music is going.”
